   Grandfather had too much land, a half acre. I talked him into selling us half of his property, which gave us a quarter acre of hill property. Then the dreams started manifesting themselves.

    First thing, I borrowed Dad's huge metal wheel barrow with a metal wheel. Then every moment possible, dug out lots of dirt to landscape the hill into three levels. The task was so horrendous that a neighbor kindly rented his tractor to me. It had a blade on it and in just a few days, the dirt was moved to the best possible locations and I started with the foundation.

    Well, jumping ahead a few years, after I had hand cut out of shale banks 20 miles away, five loads of rock to be used for landscaping , gardening dreams started coming into reality.

    After all, my rock banks were in place, the old washing machine tub was buried in the ground for our fire pit, the 100 foot walk going down from the road to the front door of the house was done.

    Now, the easy part.  What a dreamer I was! 

    I foolishly thought the hard work was done and all that was necessary now was to plant some seeds and presto, we would have lots of flowers, peas, potatoes, and whatever else my silly heart desired. After many, many tries to create a successful garden, I gave up.

    Now, years later, after a life time of experiences, I now have loads of gardening information at my finger tips. It still is a challenge to be happy with what I do, but that's OK. Creating something new in my Kitchen Garden every year and sometimes a few times every year, is a real exciting thing to do. Now I know what the soil should be like, what plant does best in what space.
